The Count function in Excel is used to count the number of values in a selection of cells.
How to use COUNT in Excel
Type =Count( in a cell and select the cells you want to count for numerical entries. After selection, close the bracket with ) and hit enter. The cell you entered the COUNT formula in will show the result. See screenshot below.

The COUNT function works both vertically, horizontally, and can be used for a 2 dimensional selection as well (cells selected over an area). The COUNT function does NOT count words or letters.

Use COUNTA to count non-numerical values in Excel
If you used the simple Count function over words, names, or non-numbers, you would just get a 0.
Instead you can use =COUNTA( and make your selection. This formula counts the number of cells in the selection that are not empty and does not care whether they are numbers, letters, or symbols. Note how the blank cell in the selection was not counted.
